100 Greatest Red Sox >> #101: Wally

Wally the Green Monster, Mascot, #97 (1997 - present)

place stat line here

Wally the Green Monster is the official mascot for the Boston Red Sox Major League Baseball team. The etymology of his name is derived from the Green Monster nickname of the 37-foot wall in left field at Fenway Park. Wally debuted in 1997 to the chagrin of many older Red Sox fans. Although he was a hit with children, the older fans did not immediately adopt him as part of the franchise. As of 2006, Wally has become a popular mascot for fans of all ages, largely due to broadcaster Jerry Remy creating stories about him and sharing them during televised games.

One little nitpick: Its Fire Brand of the AL, not Firebrand of the AL (over on the right, the links). Thanks

You've GOT to be kidding! The San Diego Chicken was the only stupid fuzzy mascot that approaches legitimacy, the rest are merely copies representing misguided attempts to pander to kids. It's a mystery to me why management seems to think kids need Wally when the most sublime game in history is all that is required to hold their attention. KILL WALLY! Let's go Red Sox!

Well, from a Yankees fan: New York does not need to have some stupid fuzzy mascot to hype up it's reputation. It's not really the biggest story in baseball that the Sox have wone a few series games. What about the amazing track record of the Yanks? All of you Boston fans have got to be kidding me. Big deal. They won. To play for the Yankees are in the dreams of ALL Minor Leauge players. To step onto that field is uncomparable. In essence: this is why NY does not need a stupid mascot, and Boston does. NY generates interest with it's superior record. Not it's mascot.

This is a truly naive/silly opinion. Not even the most ardent Yankees fan (with a hint of intelligence) would say that Boston needs a stupid mascot. Honestly, I've gone several games at a time at Fenway without even seeing or remembering him.

If you want to go there, why does NYY feel like they need pump-up-the-crowd music, and Boston doesn't? We must be better fans right? No, it's just tradition. Just like the mascot thing.

Fans like you rambler335, are people who do not understand the vital part of baseball that both the Red Sox and Yankees are. If you are a Yankees fan who is so satisfied with winning all those World Series (that you personally had nothing to do with), then why are you posting hate about a MASCOT on a site paying tribute to Red Sox players? What makes you so insecure?

Let go of your hate, young rambler335.
Enjoy the rivalry.
Celebrate the Ying and the Yang of baseball.

And please, go post on a Yankees site. Believe me, there's plenty of them. =)
